Purpose

This project aims to inspire middle school students to explore and celebrate the rich tapestry of Hispanic heritage through filmmaking. By producing personal narrative videos, students will learn to capture diverse stories within their community, fostering a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity. Through collaborative experiences with community partners, students will develop their filmmaking skills to highlight the significance of Hispanic heritage, culminating in a public exhibition that shares these stories with a broader audience.

Learning goals

Students will develop skills in storytelling and interviewing by crafting compelling narratives that highlight the significance of Hispanic heritage through film. They will learn to apply filmmaking techniques, including editing and scene composition, to create impactful short documentaries. Additionally, the project aims to cultivate cultural sensitivity and appreciation as students engage with diverse perspectives within their community, fostering a deeper understanding of Hispanic customs and traditions. Through reflective practices, students will enhance their ability to evaluate and articulate personal and community narratives, contributing to a broader appreciation of cultural diversity.

Products

Students will produce a series of short documentary-style videos that capture authentic personal stories of Hispanic heritage within their school community. They will utilize filmmaking techniques learned in class to ensure each video is impactful, with attention to narrative clarity and cultural authenticity. These videos will be uploaded to a virtual platform for wider community access, providing a tangible product that celebrates and educates viewers about diverse Hispanic narratives.

Launch

Begin with 'Storytelling Circles,' where small groups including Hispanic community leaders, school alumni, and students exchange personal heritage stories, sparking inspiration for video themes. Simultaneously, organize an 'Experience Exchange' with a partner school that has Hispanic programs, allowing students to collaboratively engage with peers’ heritage narratives. These activities set a dynamic tone for the project, immersing students in diverse experiences that will shape their video narratives.

Exhibition

Students will upload their final video projects onto 'Heritage Narratives: A Virtual Collection,' an online platform accessible to the school community and beyond. To deepen engagement, organize a live Q&A webinar where student filmmakers discuss their projects and their impact, providing an opportunity for viewers to ask questions and learn more about the stories behind the videos. This virtual exhibition encourages discourse on cultural diversity and allows students to showcase their creativity and understanding of Hispanic heritage in a meaningful way.
