Purpose

This project empowers middle school students to bridge generational gaps through a hands-on filmmaking and storytelling experience that highlights historical and personal narratives. By conducting interviews with elders, students hone critical communication skills while developing a deep understanding of the cultural and technological shifts across generations. Through this journey, students not only refine their technical abilities in photography and filmmaking but also cultivate empathy and insight into their own identities and communities, culminating in a shared storytelling festival that celebrates collective history and future aspirations.

Learning goals

Through this project, students aim to develop critical interview and storytelling skills, capturing authentic narratives from elders. They refine their technical abilities in photography and filmmaking to craft compelling short documentaries. By engaging in iterative peer and self-reflection, students enhance their communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills, while gaining a deeper understanding of generational perspectives and changes.

Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.WHST.6-8.7 - Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.8.7 - Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration.
Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will develop short documentary films showcasing their intergenerational interviews, combining insights with historical imagery. Additionally, they'll create digital portfolios compiling their interview footage, photographs, and reflective writings, evidencing their learning journey. Throughout the project, students will participate in a storytelling festival, where they share live readings of interview narratives, enhanced by photographic displays or film projections. These products will culminate in a 'Generations Screening Event,' where students will present and reflect on their documentaries with the community.

Launch

Launch the project by organizing a 'Time Capsule Workshop' where students and elders each bring an item that represents their respective generations. Use these objects to spark meaningful conversations and inspire interview topics, allowing students to connect past and present through tangible, personal artifacts. This initial engagement sets the stage for students to explore themes of generational change and continuity in their upcoming documentary projects.

Exhibition

Host a 'Generations Screening Event' where students showcase their documentary films. Invite families and community elders to engage in a Q&A session, fostering dialogue and connection. Encourage students to discuss the stories behind their projects, highlighting their journey and insights gained through the process. Enhance the event with live storytelling or photographic displays to enrich the multimedia experience for attendees.
