Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse students in a hands-on exploration of the cultural and political controversies of the 1920s, using the engaging format of an escape room to deepen understanding of historical debates. By collaboratively designing and solving puzzles related to the Harlem Renaissance, gender roles, and the clash between modernism and traditional values, students gain critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills. This experience encourages them to connect historical contexts to present-day cultural dynamics, fostering comprehensive analysis and reflection on the enduring impacts of these debates.

Learning goals

Students will examine the cultural shifts of the 1920s, exploring modernism versus traditional values using art analysis. Through creating an escape room themed around this era, students will deepen their understanding of historical controversies and artistic evolutions. Participants will develop communication and collaborative skills by co-designing and presenting their escape rooms, reflecting critically on the historical and contemporary cultural impacts.

Products

After exploring the escape room designed around the cultural and political controversies of the 1920s, students will collaboratively design their own escape rooms. These rooms should reflect elements of the Harlem Renaissance and the societal debates of the era. To deepen understanding, students will create artistic pieces, such as visual artwork or spoken word, that channel the voices of 1920s artists and activists. Finally, students will document their creative process and generate digital portfolios showcasing their escape room designs and cultural reflections.

Launch

Begin the lesson with a captivating video montage featuring iconic images, music, and voices from the 1920s, such as jazz compositions and clips from flapper-era films. Following the montage, initiate a brief interactive discussion where students share initial thoughts and stories or artifacts they know from that era. Encourage them to brainstorm aspects of culture and history they might encounter as part of the escape room challenge. This dynamic launch sets the stage for deeper exploration by tapping into students' curiosity and collective knowledge.

Exhibition

After completing the escape room, students will work in teams to design and create their own themed escape rooms based on the cultural and political controversies of the 1920s. These creations will be showcased in a "1920s Cultural Maze" event, where students, educators, and community members can experience each escape room. Each team will present their curated narratives, puzzles, and evidence of historical analysis, followed by a reflection session to discuss insights gained from the project and connections to the essential question.
