Purpose

Students will engage in an immersive, hands-on exploration of the consequences of living without surface water. Through real-world simulations and collaborative projects, they will investigate environmental impacts and societal changes, fostering a deeper understanding of conservation importance. This project promotes creativity and critical thinking as students produce compelling videos to advocate for sustainable practices.

Learning goals

Students will understand the critical importance of surface water in sustaining life and ecosystems, and how its absence could drastically alter daily activities and environmental balance. They will develop skills in media creation and communication, using these to craft a persuasive video that encourages responsible water usage and environmental stewardship. Through the experiential project launch, learners will gain insight into the personal and societal impact of water scarcity. By the end of the project, students will have reflected deeply on their own roles in conserving resources and promoting sustainable practices.

Products

Students will work collaboratively to produce short informational videos that highlight strategies for conserving water and reducing plastic use, while envisioning future scenarios without surface water. They will also create storyboard outlines and scripts that explore the personal, social, and environmental implications of a waterless world, using their experiences from the Waterless Challenge as a foundation. Each group will present their video to the class, providing insights and reflections from their narratives to enhance learning and engagement.

Launch

Begin with "The Waterless Challenge" event, where students experience simulations of everyday activities without surface water, such as washing hands, cooking, or gardening. Encourage students to document their experiences and gather insights through structured observation and journaling. Facilitate discussions about how these changes might impact life, providing a springboard for creativity and inquiry as they begin their projects. Establish a collaborative atmosphere where students share ideas and concerns, setting the stage for further exploration into the project's essential question.

Exhibition

At the culmination of the project, organize a student-led Water Conservation Expo within the school. Students will showcase their short informational videos to classmates, teachers, and invited guests, such as local environmental advocates or community leaders. Include interactive stations where students can demonstrate sustainable practices and discuss insights gained from the Waterless Challenge. This event invites dialogue and feedback, encouraging students to reflect on their learning experience and impact.
