Purpose

In this learning experience, students collaboratively design projects that allow them to discover innovative strategies for solving real-world problems by drawing evidence from the texts they read. They will enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they analyze texts to accurately quote and interpret them, fostering a deeper understanding of their own identities and roles within the community. Through peer evaluation and self-reflection, students will refine their self-directed learning and communication skills, establishing strong connections to their sense of place and belonging.

Learning goals

Engage students in collaboratively designing a project that addresses a real-world problem identified within the text they read. Encourage accurate citation and interpretation of text to form deeper connections with their identities and community roles. Challenge students to use critical thinking to propose innovative solutions and communicate their ideas effectively through presentations and peer evaluations.

Standards
  • [Wisconsin] R1 - Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly or implicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a multimedia presentation using evidence from "Wonders" stories to address real-world problems in their community. Each group will work together to interpret and quote the text accurately, using their findings to propose innovative solutions. At the end of the lesson, students will present their work, receiving peer feedback to refine their understanding and communication skills.

Launch

Begin the lesson with a collaborative story-building activity where students use textual evidence to craft a community-centered narrative. Each group receives a short excerpt from a text, and they must accurately quote and interpret the passage to create a collective storyline reflecting real-world challenges and innovative solutions. As they share their stories with the class, they engage in meaningful reflection about their roles in the community. This hands-on project encourages students to listen actively and offer insights into their peers' work, fostering both critical thinking and effective communication skills within the given timeframe.

Exhibition

Students will create a multimedia presentation showcasing their chosen innovative solution to a community problem, supported by text evidence from their research. The presentation will include a gallery walk where peers and community members can interact, provide feedback, and engage in dialogue about the various approaches and insights shared. Each student will prepare a brief, evidence-backed explanation of their project, reflecting on their identity and community role, and practice effective communication by answering questions from the audience.
