Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse 7th-grade students in the real-world application of social analysis and civic engagement by exploring the balance between societal rules and individual freedoms. Through the collaborative creation of a 'Charter of Elsewhere,' students will develop critical thinking and self-directed learning skills. Participants will evaluate existing societal structures, propose innovative solutions, and engage with their peers in meaningful critiques and discussions, fostering an understanding of the broader implications of governance and societal norms.

Learning goals

Students will develop critical analysis skills by examining societal rules in "The Giver" and proposing alternative laws for the fictional colony, Elsewhere. They will enhance their collaborative and communication abilities through group critiques and peer reviews, leading to improved self-directed learning as they iterate on their ideas using feedback. By engaging in role-play, creating multimedia art for the Community Collage Wall, and participating in reflective discussions, students will gain a deeper understanding of balancing community safety with individual freedoms. Additionally, they will cultivate the ability to engage in thoughtful dialogue, apply textual evidence effectively, and demonstrate creativity in presenting solutions to complex societal challenges.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create and refine their Shadow Ledgers, identifying societal gaps through guided analysis of "The Giver." Collectively, they will draft and visually express their 'Charter of Elsewhere' laws on a dynamic 'Community Collage Wall,' integrating creative multimedia elements and QR codes for interactive storytelling. This final product will encapsulate their understanding and propose innovative societal solutions, displayed and shared during the community exhibition.

Launch

Ignite the project with a dynamic 'Harmony Hackathon' day, where students delve into memorable scenes from 'The Giver' to identify aspects of community life that could be improved. This creative start allows them to brainstorm innovative laws that enhance freedom without compromising safety. Encouraging collaboration from the outset, students break into teams to produce initial concepts for their 'Charter of Elsewhere,' setting a proactive tone for the learning journey ahead.

Exhibition

Invite families and community members to a vibrant 'Community Collage Wall' exhibition where students showcase their multimedia pieces. Each artwork creatively symbolizes laws from their 'Charter of Elsewhere' and includes QR codes linking to interactive storytelling components. Encourage attendees to engage by adding their reflections to the display, fostering a communal dialogue on balancing safety and freedom. This interactive experience not only celebrates student work but also serves as a live discussion platform for the broader community about envisioning nurturing societies.
