Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to inspire students to explore their personal identity and cultural heritage through creative expression, drawing inspiration from the groundbreaking work of Frida Kahlo. This project fosters a deeper understanding of how personal experiences and cultural backgrounds influence art while enhancing students' artistic skills and self-reflective abilities. By engaging with community partners and peers, students will collaboratively develop a sense of belonging and appreciation for diversity, ultimately culminating in a shared celebration of their unique narratives and Kahlo's lasting impact.

Learning goals

Students will gain an understanding of how personal experiences, culture, and identity can be visually expressed through art by creating autobiographical self-portraits in the style of Frida Kahlo. They will develop technical skills in portrait drawing, focusing on facial proportions, symmetry, and color application. Throughout the project, students will engage in research and discussions that deepen their awareness of Frida Kahlo's impact on art and culture, while they practice communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and self-reflection. Through peer critiques and presentations, students will articulate the significance behind their artistic choices.

Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Students will create an autobiographical self-portrait in the style of Frida Kahlo, incorporating elements that reflect their personal experiences. Throughout the project, they will research Kahlo's life and Mexican culture to inform their own designs, practicing portrait techniques and exploring identity expression. The final project will include individual self-portraits, exhibited in a 'Mexican Mosaic Mural' that celebrates diversity and cultural heritage. Students will also design written captions describing the significance of their artistic choices, contributing these to the gallery walk and presentation day events.

Launch

Begin the project with an immersive Frida Kahlo Day, where students experience a mini cultural festival complete with a vibrant display of Mexican music, traditional attire, and an engaging visual tour of Frida Kahlo's most iconic works. Invite students to participate in a collaborative storytelling session that introduces Kahlo's life and legacy through illustrated story cards. Conclude the launch with the introduction of the project: students receive their sketchbooks and discuss the essential question, setting the stage for their deep-dive into self-expression through art.

Exhibition

The exhibition will feature a dynamic 'Mexican Mosaic Mural' that incorporates each student's self-portrait into a larger collaborative art piece celebrating Mexican culture and Frida Kahlo's influence. This mural will be showcased during a community event where students, families, cultural center partners, and other community members can explore the artworks. As part of the festivities, students will provide verbal presentations, sharing the stories behind their portraits and articulating their learning process. The event will include cultural performances and interactive stations to deepen the connection to Kahlo's heritage, creating an inclusive celebration of identity and artistic expression.
