Purpose

This project aims to engage middle school students in a hands-on exploration of Ancestral Puebloan pottery, enabling them to understand its historical and cultural significance through practical application. By working collaboratively to design and craft their coil pots, students will develop skills in communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving while connecting past and present cultural narratives. The ultimate goal is for students to express personal creativity and insights, culminating in a shared exhibition that bridges historical artistry with modern perspectives.

Learning goals

The primary learning goals focus on developing students' understanding of Ancestral Puebloan pottery as both an artistic and cultural artifact. Students will co-design their pottery projects to strengthen collaboration and peer leadership skills, drawing on historical techniques and personal creativity. They will enhance critical thinking by exploring authentic cultural expressions and consider their relevance to contemporary contexts. Effective communication is nurtured through presenting their pottery, exchanging feedback, and reflecting on their socio-emotional journey. By the end of the project, students will be equipped to articulate how their creations connect to broader cultural and personal narratives.
Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Throughout this hands-on project, students will craft personalized coil pots utilizing Ancestral Puebloan techniques. They will develop a series of functional or decorative vessels, such as Mimbres bowls or jars, that embody both historical and personal narratives. Each student will present their finished pottery pieces in a curated virtual gallery, narrating the cultural inspirations and personal stories behind their creations to a broader audience. Additionally, students will participate in peer feedback sessions and document their creative journeys through reflection journaling, connecting the practical experience with historical research and personal growth.

Launch

Begin with a dynamic 'Cultural Connection Kickoff,' inviting students to collaborate in small groups to explore and discuss the essential questions. Utilize a virtual museum partner to showcase a diverse selection of Southwestern pottery pieces, grounding students in historical and cultural contexts. Encouraged to voice their initial responses and personal connections, students set the stage for discovery by sharing thoughts on how traditional pottery can inspire contemporary artistic expression.

Exhibition

Organize a 'Playback Pottery Forum' where students present their personalized coil pots through a curated virtual gallery. Students will narrate the cultural and personal inspirations behind each piece, connecting historical and personal narratives. This virtual platform should facilitate an engaging audience experience, inviting viewers to interact by asking questions and leaving feedback, to foster an interactive and educational exchange.
