Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse students in the intricacies of the legal system through a mock trial, fostering their understanding of ethics, evidence, and persuasive communication. Students will engage in authentic, hands-on learning activities that blend critical thinking, collaboration, and self-direction, empowering them to navigate complex societal issues thoughtfully. By collaborating with community partners and reflecting on their experiences, students will develop essential competencies in communication and problem-solving, which are vital for civic engagement and personal growth.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively explore the ethical considerations within the legal system, understanding how ethics, evidence, and persuasive communication influence trial outcomes. They will develop persuasive communication skills, focusing on the articulation and structure of arguments within a legal context through practical engagements. By reflecting on their experiences, they will gain insights into their values and improve their ability to utilize feedback for self-directed learning.

Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.11-12.1 - Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 11—12 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will craft a storyboard or comic strip showcasing key moments of the mock trial, capturing the flow of arguments, witness testimonies, and ethical dilemmas their characters encounter. They'll also assemble a gallery of artifacts, such as annotated trial scripts and reflective journals, to document their strategic choices and personal insights gained during the project. At the 'Verdict Viewpoint' event, these creations will be presented, alongside their rhetorical performance, to legal professionals and peers, fostering a vibrant dialogue about their learning journey.

Launch

Begin the project with an "Ethics in Law Seminar" that immerses students in a dynamic exploration of ethical principles within the legal system. Invite legal professionals and speakers from public speaking forums to lead discussions and interactive activities that challenge students to examine their values in relation to the essential question of the project. This collaborative event sets the stage for students to immediately start connecting their personal perspectives to the real-world application of legal ethics, preparing them for the deeper learning experiences ahead.

Exhibition

Arrange a 'Verdict Viewpoint' event where students present their developed storyboards or comic strips alongside gallery displays highlighting their trial strategies and reflections. Invite local legal professionals to offer feedback on the students' trial performances and rhetorical skills during a panel discussion. This event creates an interactive space for students to share insights gained through the project and engage with the larger community in evaluating their contributions to the mock trial experience.
