Purpose

This project engages students in a creative, engineering-based challenge to design and build a kite-copter that effectively utilizes wind power. Through hands-on experimentation and collaboration with community partners, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they explore fundamental principles of aerodynamics and renewable energy. By connecting theoretical concepts to practical applications, the project aims to foster an early interest in science and technology, while emphasizing innovation and real-world problem-solving.

Learning goals

Students will learn the principles of aerodynamics and wind energy by designing and constructing their own kite-copter. They will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they iterate on their designs based on testing and feedback from peers and community partners. Collaboration and communication are key as they engage in weekly reflection circles to share insights and tackle challenges. By engaging with experts from local museums and universities, students will connect theoretical knowledge to practical applications, enhancing their understanding of engineering concepts.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Throughout the "Kite Copter Adventure," students will develop and iteratively improve a prototype of a kite-copter that effectively harnesses wind power to achieve stable flight. By the end of the project, each student will produce a fully functional kite-copter, complete with a detailed presentation that highlights the design process, challenges encountered, and solutions devised. These products will reflect the students' deep engagement with aerodynamics and their understanding of innovative design principles.

Launch

Kick off the project with a visit to a local science and technology museum, where students participate in a dynamic workshop on aerodynamics and wind energy. Upon returning to class, encourage students to share their initial ideas and sketches for their kite-copter designs in a gallery walk format. This hands-on introduction will engage students and set the foundation for the inquiry and innovation ahead.

Exhibition

At the conclusion of the Kite Copter Adventure project, students will host a "Wind Wonders" showcase event at the local science and technology museum. Here, they will present their kite-copters to peers, family members, and community guests, demonstrating their understanding of aerodynamics and wind energy. Each student or team will have a display area to illustrate their design process, challenges and achievements, with an emphasis on innovative solutions and critical problem-solving. Museum and university partners will be present to offer feedback and insights, further enhancing the authentic learning experience.
