Purpose

The purpose of the 'Create-A-Creature Workshop' is to immerse students in a hands-on, collaborative project where they exercise their creativity and critical thinking skills to design an organism uniquely adapted to its environment. This experience nurtures their ability to co-design with peers, make shared decisions, and effectively communicate their understanding of ecological relationships. By crafting a 3D model and situating it within a classroom ecosystem diorama, students actively engage with content, reflect on their learning journey, and present their innovative solutions, all while building a stronger sense of self and community.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively design a creature, integrating their understanding of ecosystem dynamics and the specific adaptations necessary for survival. They will build skills in critical thinking and problem-solving as they explore how their unique organisms interact within a simulated ecosystem. Through effective communication, students will present and reflect on their work, fostering a deeper sense of identity and belonging within the learning community. The project will culminate in a classroom exhibition, where students share their creatures and receive peer feedback, enhancing their academic mindset and relational agency.
Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Throughout this learning experience, students will collaboratively design a unique organism, creatively using craft materials to build a 3D model. By the end of the project, each team's creature will be integrated into a collective ecosystem diorama displayed in the classroom. Alongside their models, students will present detailed accounts of their creature’s niche within the ecosystem, explaining its adaptations and interactions, which will be refined through peer feedback sessions. This collaborative exhibition will facilitate effective communication, critical thinking, and an academic mindset.

Launch

Begin the 'Create-A-Creature Workshop' with an imaginative storytelling session where students are invited to explore diverse ecosystems through vivid narratives. Students will then pair up and brainstorm initial ideas for their unique creature designs, inspired by the details and survival tactics highlighted in the stories. Provide craft materials and encourage each team to start sketching or modeling their creatures, focusing on features that enable them to thrive in their chosen ecosystems. This collaborative and creative launch sets the tone for teamwork and innovation throughout the project.

Exhibition

On Day 5, students will transform the classroom into an interactive ecosystem gallery showcasing their projects. Each student will present their creature's design and ecological role within a simulated ecosystem diorama. Guests will be invited to explore the gallery, engage with students, ask questions, and provide feedback. This dynamic exhibition gives students the stage to apply their collaboration, communication skills, and to critically reflect on their learning journey.
