Community Helper Concepts

Global Citizen SL.K.1 SL.K.3 SL.K.2 Reflection Submission Required

Students work in small groups to brainstorm multiple community helper roles drawn from their diverse local surroundings, using art, storytelling, and multilingual perspectives. They record ideas in quick brainstorm notes, create concept sketches or storyboards, build a simple feasibility/impact matrix, and identify their top 3 concepts with rationale. They incorporate empathy artifacts and seek brief feedback from peers or local helpers to refine their ideas, preparing inclusive representations for the upcoming Community Helper Art Gallery.

2 Begin the storytelling circle where each student shares a personal or family story involving a community helper. (15 min)
3 Discuss the stories shared, and encourage students to ask questions to learn more and clarify any unclear points. (10 min)
4 Create quick brainstorm notes or sketches of community helpers based on the stories shared, using art supplies. (10 min)
5 Wrap up with a short reflection session, where students share how they felt during the storytelling and brainstorm. (5 min)
Preparation (3 items)
  • Set up chairs or mats in a circle for the storytelling session.
  • Prepare drawing paper and art supplies like markers, crayons, and pencils.
  • Display visual aids featuring various community helpers (e.g., pictures, books) to stimulate ideas.
Student-facing instructions
Your task is to listen to stories about community helpers shared by your classmates and ask questions if you don't understand something. After the storytelling, you'll create drawings or notes about the helpers you learned about. Finally, you'll share how you felt about the activity.
