Fifth-grade learners will embark on a dynamic journey to understand the foundational principles of the United States Constitution, examining their historical and contemporary impact. Through project-based exploration, role-play, and reflection, students actively engage with pivotal moments shaping democratic ideals, such as African American and women's suffrage. By crafting a mock constitutional amendment, they apply critical thinking to address modern societal issues, ensuring deep connections between historical events and present-day governance. This immersive learning experience fosters a comprehensive grasp of America's constitutional evolution, promoting active participation and critical exploration.
Learning goals
Students will explore how historical conflicts and collaborations among early American settlers led to the foundation of a government rooted in popular sovereignty, rule of law, and federalism. They will examine democratic ideals manifested in significant Constitutional amendments, focusing on their impact on society then and now. By analyzing key events such as African American and women's suffrage, students will understand the evolution of equality and inalienable rights within the U.S. Constitution. Through creating and presenting a mock amendment, students will apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address contemporary societal issues with an understanding of democratic principles.

Throughout the project, students will collaboratively create a series of historical role-play stations, each highlighting significant constitutional amendments and their societal impact. By the end of the week, students will design and present a mock constitutional amendment addressing a current issue, demonstrating their understanding of democratic ideals and the historical evolution of inalienable rights. Students will also maintain individual reflection journals documenting their insights and emotional responses to the historical events studied.
Launch
Kick off the project with an interactive class debate, simulating a Constitutional Convention where students take on the roles of various historical figures involved in the establishment of the U.S. government. Begin with a brief introduction to the major players and their conflicting viewpoints, then allow students to debate proposed laws and compromises that could address modern community issues. Conclude with students highlighting how historical discussions and decisions have shaped current democratic values.

The exhibition will be a "Constitutional Fair" where students present their mock constitutional amendments addressing contemporary issues. They will use interactive displays, digital presentations, and role-plays to explain their amendments, highlighting democratic principles. Community members, other classes, and families are invited to engage with the students' projects, providing feedback and asking questions. The exhibition encourages dialogue and celebrates students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills demonstrated throughout their project journey.
