The Challenge

Misunderstandings and stereotypes can prevent you from appreciating differences and strengths in others, ultimately hindering respectful relationships. A deep look at diverse cultures and identities is essential to challenge misconceptions and foster empathy, inclusivity, and understanding in society.

Challenge Question

"How can we learn to appreciate and celebrate our own culture while respecting and valuing the diverse cultures of our classmates?"

Competencies

Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Learning Partners and Clients

Older students will serve as mentors, sharing their insights and experiences in cultural understanding with the 2nd grade students. The school counselor will facilitate empathy workshops to guide effective listening and respect for differences. SAC State Barrio Arts will collaborate with students on creating Lotteria cards, integrating art with cultural storytelling and reflection.

Do	I can work with my classmates to bring our mural idea to life, monitoring its progress and ensuring it showcases our learning.
Share	I can share our mural and my personal growth through a presentation, explaining how my understanding of different cultures has deepened through this experience.
