Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage high school students in an in-depth exploration of vehicle depreciation, emphasizing real-world application of exponential decay functions. Through hands-on research and data analysis, students develop a deeper understanding of the economic and technological factors that influence vehicle value over time. By comparing different vehicle types, students cultivate critical thinking and analytical skills that are crucial for making informed financial decisions. This project also encourages students to consider sustainability and innovation within the automotive industry, enhancing their awareness and perspective on current and future trends.

Learning goals

Students will develop an understanding of how different factors such as vehicle type, brand, and technology influence depreciation rates. They will enhance their financial literacy skills by calculating and interpreting exponential decay functions for real-world applications. Through project-based activities, students will strengthen their research, analytical, and presentation skills while fostering critical thinking regarding the economic and environmental implications of vehicle depreciation.

Products

Throughout this learning experience, students will produce detailed reports analyzing and comparing the depreciation rates of an electric vehicle, a truck, and a luxury vehicle. They will also create visual representations, including graphs and charts, that illustrate the concept of exponential decay in vehicle depreciation. By the end of the project, students will compile these visuals and written analyses into a professional presentation for their peers and teachers in a 'Vehicle Value Gallery' exhibition. The final product includes an individual reflection paragraph, sharing personal insights on the economic, technological, and sustainable aspects of vehicle depreciation.

Launch

Kick off the project with an engaging "Car Showroom Simulation" where students explore a virtual or printed catalog of diverse vehicle types. They select three vehicles from this interactive lineup, sparking curiosity about the factors contributing to vehicle depreciation. This initial exploration sets the stage for students to dive deeper into the economic, technological, and sustainability aspects of vehicles, aligning perfectly with their upcoming research and calculations.

Exhibition

Students will display their graphs and charts in a 'Vehicle Value Gallery' set up within the classroom. Each exhibit board will showcase the student's work, allowing classmates and teachers to explore and engage with the data and visual presentations. During a designated gallery walk, other students and faculty members can participate in Q&A sessions, enabling students to articulate their findings and insights on vehicle depreciation.
