Purpose

The overall purpose of the learning experience is to actively engage students in using their voices to address and propose solutions to social issues they are passionate about, through the creation and presentation of an informative and persuasive brochure. This project-based approach encourages students to research deeply, think critically, and articulate their ideas effectively, fostering communication skills and a sense of personal responsibility. By collaborating with peers and gathering diverse perspectives through polling, students will enhance their understanding of the issues and develop the ability to advocate for change in meaningful ways.

Learning goals

Students will utilize critical thinking skills to research and analyze a social issue of interest, drawing upon multiple reliable sources to gather strong evidence (RI.9-10.1). They will articulate a clear central idea and support it with compelling details and statistics (RI.9-10.2). Students will write a coherent argument in their brochures that clearly conveys the significance of their chosen issue, supported by valid reasoning and sufficient evidence (W.9-10.1). They will also demonstrate personal responsibility and effective communication throughout the project, actively participating in group discussions and reflecting on their learning process and impact.

Standards

  • [North Carolina] RI.9-10.2 - Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
  • [North Carolina] W.9-10.5 - Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question) or solve a problem; narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate; synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
  • [North Carolina] W.9-10.1 - Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.

Products

Throughout this learning experience, students will collaboratively create an informative and visually engaging social issues brochure that includes compelling titles, key statistics, root causes, potential solutions, and an Activist Statement. They will also develop and refine their oral presentation skills as they prepare to share their brochures and insights during the culminating Social Change Symposium. Daily reflection journals will be maintained to capture personal and intellectual growth, encouraging students to articulate and enhance their understanding of how they can influence change on issues they care about.

Launch

Kick off the project using "Your Voice Matters" PearDeck to stimulate students’ empathy and engagement with social issues that resonate with them. Guide students through interactive questions and prompts designed to spark introspection and conversation about personal values and community concerns. Encourage learners to document their reflections as they form connections between their personal experiences and larger societal challenges, setting the stage for the subsequent group research and brochure development.

Exhibition

Host a 'Social Change Symposium' in a gallery walk format, where student groups display their brochures alongside posters, visual aids, or digital presentations that enhance understanding of their social issue. Invite classmates, teachers, and school leaders to participate, sparking dialogue about each group's research findings and proposed solutions. Encourage visitors to leave feedback and questions, facilitating a dynamic exchange of ideas and fostering a greater awareness and commitment to social change within the school community.
