Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage 10th-grade students in hands-on, real-world exploration of conservation challenges related to urbanization and its impact on biodiversity. Students will investigate the effects of modern city infrastructure, such as glass buildings, on bird populations and will collaborate with the Denison Nature Center to understand existing conservation efforts. By designing innovative bird-safe window covers, students will address and mitigate urban threats, creating practical solutions that contribute to urban biodiversity conservation. This project will culminate in an earth day exhibition where students present their designs and demonstrate their understanding of conservation principles and engineering design through digital portfolios.

Learning goals

Students will explore the complexities of biodiversity and urbanization, focusing on conservation initiatives, preventative strategies, and their interaction with energy, food, and water resources. They'll analyze real-world impacts and devise solutions, such as designing bird-safe window covers, while considering urban threats like glass buildings. Through engaging with community partners like the Denison Nature Center, students will gain practical insights into conservation efforts, enhancing their understanding of how innovative design can mitigate environmental challenges.

Products

Students will develop, test, and refine functional bird-safe window covers designed to minimize avian collisions in urban environments. Throughout the project, students will produce sketches and miniature models showcasing their design process and revisions. The final products will be presented at the Earth Day exhibition, reflecting creative design solutions aimed at protecting bird populations affected by urbanization.

Launch

Start the project with a captivating video showcasing birding in NYC, highlighting the unique choices of the Javits Center's bird-safe glass and their conservation efforts. After the video, engage students in a lively discussion about the impact of urbanization on wildlife, focusing on the critical balance between development and nature preservation. Guide students to explore the essential question about designing solutions to mitigate urban threats to birds as their project mission. Encourage immediate brainstorming sessions on potential innovative design ideas, setting the stage for hands-on exploration and collaboration throughout the project.

Exhibition

Present your bird-safe window designs in an Earth Day celebration held at your school. Set up interactive booths where visitors can learn from your digital portfolios, view prototypes, and engage with your reflective journals. Invite local conservationists and community members from Denison Nature Center to provide insights and feedback on your designs, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas. Include hands-on demonstrations showing the effectiveness of your designs in preventing bird collisions, creating an informative and vibrant event for all participants.
