Tea-rific Garden Adventure

Angela J
1-pager

Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse 2nd-grade students in the lifecycle of tea plants by transforming part of their classroom into a dynamic tea garden, offering a hands-on exploration of plant science and cultural heritage. Through this project, students document their journey from seed planting to tea brewing, integrating scientific inquiry with artistic expression and community engagement. By collaborating with horticulturist experts and each other, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of plant growth, develop essential language and math skills, and build a meaningful connection with the cultural narratives surrounding tea, culminating in shared experiences with their broader school community.

Learning goals

The learning goals are for students to understand and describe the plant life cycle and anatomy through hands-on activities focused on growing tea plants. Students will enhance their language arts skills by keeping detailed observation journals that capture their experiences and reflections using grade-appropriate vocabulary. They will practice mathematical skills by measuring plant growth and calculating water requirements, integrating real-world application of measurement concepts. Students will explore the cultural significance of tea, learning to appreciate its global context and community value while engaging with social studies content. Through creating an illustrated guidebook and participating in various exchanges, they will also develop collaboration, communication, and presentation skills.

Products

Throughout the project, students will cultivate a classroom tea garden where they will engage hands-on with the plant lifecycle from seed to harvest. By the end of the experience, they will have created an illustrated guidebook documenting each phase of the tea plant's growth, complete with personal sketches, observations, and reflections. This guidebook, enriched with student work, will be shared with the school garden club and the broader school community, showcasing their journey and learnings.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Tea Tales Morning', where a local storyteller captivates the class with traditional tales from diverse tea-growing cultures around the world. This storytelling session should ignite the students' interest and set the stage for their upcoming plant adventures, highlighting the global significance of tea. Provide interactive activities alongside the stories, such as guess-the-tea-flavors or tea-sample leaf crafts, to deepen engagement and establish a connection to their upcoming hands-on project.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Garden Gala: Tea Time Edition,' transforming the classroom into a tea-themed exhibit. This event will feature creative art displays of the plant life cycle, storytelling corners where students share journal reflections, and live demonstrations of the tea brewing process using leaves harvested from their garden. Guests, including family members, peers, and local community partners, will be invited to experience the students’ journey and learn through interactive presentations.
