Purpose

Students will investigate the connection between sleep and academic performance through age-appropriate activities designed for 4th-grade students. These activities will include creating basic sleep journals, learning to read simple graphs, and discussing their impact on school performance in small groups. Students will work together to craft engaging presentations that showcase their understanding, fostering curiosity, teamwork, and communication in a hands-on learning environment.

Learning goals

Students will explore the basics of sleep patterns, understanding the impact of rest on daily activities and learning. They will work collaboratively to design simple surveys and use creative methods to track their sleep, focusing on developing observational and interpersonal skills appropriate for their age. Participants will present their conclusions using charts or drawings—developing oral communication skills—as they explain their personal insights and experiences related to sleep and learning.

Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Students will create pictorial survey instruments to collect data on sleep patterns and its effect on learning. They will collaboratively develop and use a basic sleep tracking journal as their product, integrating simple visuals to track sleep habits over time. These products will be showcased at the Sleep Symposium through engaging displays and discussions.

Launch

Kick off the project with an interactive 'Sleep-a-thon' event where students participate in workshops and activities that explore the importance of sleep, sleep hygiene, and its effect on cognitive functions. Engage students with fun simulations to demonstrate how sleep cycles and the quality of rest impact memory and learning retention, encouraging them to relate these concepts to their daily lives. Emphasize hands-on activities that relate sleep science to real-world academic challenges, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm for their upcoming research project.

Exhibition

Invite students to participate in a 'Sleep and Learning Fair' where they creatively showcase their insights through simple hands-on displays. Set up interactive booths with easy-to-understand graphs, colorful visuals, and digital animations related to sleep cycles and academic performance. Encourage students to share their observations and ideas with classmates and parents, enhancing the audience's awareness of sleep's role in daily learning and health.
