Students meet local ocean stakeholders and observe the La Jolla marine environment through short conversations and guided encounters during an introductory snorkeling session. In pairs, you capture expectations, safety considerations, and early inspirations for your ceramic art project, recording these experiences in your field journal and reflecting on how people value and experience the ocean.

1 Introduction to the activity and safety briefing with your dive buddy. (30 min)
2 Engage in short conversations with local ocean stakeholders provided by Ocean Connectors. (60 min)
3 Prepare and organize snorkeling equipment. (30 min)
4 Conduct guided snorkeling session in pairs, taking notes on observations and reflections. (90 min)
5 Break for refreshments and to review notes briefly. (20 min)
6 Discuss insights with your partner and document initial reflections in your field journal. (40 min)

  • Coordinate with Ocean Connectors to confirm stakeholder participation and acquire partner contacts for the snorkeling dive.
Student-facing instructions
Your task is to meet with local ocean stakeholders and participate in a snorkeling experience with a dive buddy. Prepare by ensuring you have all necessary equipment. After listening to stakeholders, you will proceed to snorkel in pairs. While snorkeling, observe marine life and record your experiences in your field journal. Ensure your journal captures your reflections and insights on how the ocean inspires your ceramic artistry.
