Purpose

This project empowers students to critically engage with the intersection of law, technology, and mental health through a real-world lens, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By analyzing the legal concept of "duty of care" and its implications for corporate accountability, students collaborate in co-designing their legal arguments, refining their ideas through peer feedback, and presenting to an audience. This immersive experience not only enhances academic insights but also encourages students to reflect on their sense of identity and belonging, strengthening their communication and collaboration competencies.

Learning goals

Students will explore the application of duty of care laws to corporate actions, particularly in safeguarding adolescent mental health, through a multifaceted, real-world project. They will critically analyze and construct legal arguments, leveraging psychological studies and case examples, enhancing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Collaborative efforts will be emphasized as students co-design projects, engage in shared decision-making, and cultivate leadership skills. Effective communication will be developed through active listening, empathy-driven dialogue, and the presentation and reflection of their legal and psychological insights. Students will further their academic mindset by reflecting on their personal growth, identity, and community connection linked to the project's themes.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Throughout the project, students will maintain reflective journals that document their evolving understanding of legal principles and the real-world implications of corporate duty of care on adolescent mental health. They will collaboratively design and present a compelling legal argument, culminating in a formal presentation to local stakeholders, including the attorney and mental health professional who participated in the initial speaker series. Final products will include a comprehensive written legal brief and a peer-reviewed presentation, both demonstrating depth in analysis and clarity in communication.

Launch

To kick off the project, host a Speaker Series Launch featuring a local attorney and a mental health professional who will discuss real-world cases on corporate duty of care and its implications for adolescent mental health. Following their presentations, students can engage in interactive Q&A sessions, gaining valuable insights that inform their project work. This initial encounter sets a strong foundation for students' exploration of complex legal and psychological concepts, fostering genuine engagement and curiosity.

Exhibition

At the end of the project, students will host a Legal Symposium inviting local community members, including legal professionals and mental health advocates. Students will present their legal arguments in a formal setting, offering insights on corporate liability. Attendees will participate in feedback sessions and lively roundtable discussions, allowing students to learn from varied perspectives while exhibiting their critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. Students will also showcase reflective journals, displaying growth in their understanding of the interconnectedness between law and adolescent mental well-being.
