Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to equip students with the ability to analyze and influence their school environment in reducing social anxiety associated with transitions. By investigating real-life concerns, students collaborate to design practical solutions, enhancing their interpersonal and critical thinking skills. Through self-directed learning and meaningful reflection, they will cultivate a deeper sense of belonging and academic confidence, ultimately proposing innovative environmental designs that contribute to a more inclusive school community.

Learning goals

Students will collaborate to investigate the impact of school environments on social anxiety during transitions, co-designing innovative proposals that reflect shared decision-making and conflict resolution skills. They will engage in self-directed learning through reflection journals, using feedback to shape their process and foster insights about their personal growth. By approaching real-world problems with critical thinking, students will develop effective communication techniques as they present and critique design proposals, enhancing their academic mindset and understanding of their own identity and sense of belonging within their community.
Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will develop a comprehensive proposal for an innovative school environment redesign, focusing on minimizing social anxiety during transitions. This includes detailed plans, sketches, or models that visually represent their ideas and incorporate feedback from peer reviews. Throughout the project, students will maintain a personal reflection journal and produce a written analysis on how their design choices address anxiety factors, which will be shared in a final presentation to peers and educators.

Launch

Organize an 'Open Dialogue Day' to kick off the project, where students gather in small, diverse groups to share personal experiences with school transitions and social anxiety. Facilitate guided discussions that encourage empathy and active listening, creating a safe environment for honest communication. This initial shared experience will allow students to identify common challenges, increase awareness of different perspectives, and build a supportive community foundation for their collaborative work.

Exhibition

At the culmination of the project, students will curate an exhibition showcasing their design proposals to reimagine school environments. Each group will present their findings and innovations during a "School Design Expo" event, inviting teachers, parents, and community stakeholders. The event will include interactive displays, where attendees can engage with students and provide feedback. Additionally, student reflection journals will be available for viewing to highlight individual learning journeys and growth throughout the project.
