Purpose

The purpose of this project is to bridge mathematical theory with practical, real-world application by engaging students in meaningful decision-making processes. Through experiential learning and community partnerships, students will hone their skills in using percentages, decimals, and fractions to optimize spending while developing critical competencies like effective communication, problem-solving, and collaboration. This immersive experience aims not only to deepen students' content expertise but also to foster a sense of identity and belonging as they navigate complex questions relevant to their everyday lives.

Learning goals

Through this project, students will develop their skills in calculating percentages, discounts, and sales tax, applying these mathematical concepts to real-world shopping scenarios. They will enhance critical thinking by comparing different pricing options, fostering effective communication by presenting their findings at the 'Savvy Shopper Expo'. Collaboration will be key as students work together to plan a balanced meal using their budget. The experience will also bolster their academic mindset through reflections and community engagement, ultimately advancing their content expertise by engaging in meaningful, hands-on problem-solving activities.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.6.RP.A.3 - Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Products

Students will collaboratively design a class cookbook featuring a variety of meal plans, each accompanied by a detailed shopping list with calculations for discounts and sales tax. Additionally, students will produce digital presentations summarizing their real-world shopping experiences and math strategies used to maintain their budget effectively. As part of the 'Savvy Shopper Expo,' these presentations will highlight their understanding and application of mathematical concepts like percentages, decimals, and fractions in everyday scenarios.

Launch

To kick off the learning experience, initiate an 'Interactive Budget Challenge' where students dive into a simulated digital shopping platform to flex their math skills with percentages, discounts, and estimated taxes. Give each student a fictional budget to manage, compelling them to make strategic purchasing decisions that align with real-world scenarios. This exercise will provide immediate hands-on practice in applying their knowledge of percent's, decimals, and fractions to realistic financial situations, setting the stage for the rest of the project.

Exhibition

During the 'Savvy Shopper Expo', students will engage parents and other students by showcasing their digital slideshows, illustrating real-world math applications through calculations of discounts and sales tax. The exhibition will feature interactive stations where visitors can view students' original mock shopping receipts and recipe books, highlighting the collaborative meal planning process. Students will also present reflections on their field experience at the local supermarket, sharing insights on problem-solving strategies and effective communication.
