Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse kindergarten students in the world of plants through interactive and meaningful activities. By engaging in hands-on investigations like planting seeds and observing their growth, students connect with nature while developing critical scientific skills such as collecting data and modeling systems. This project also sparks an appreciation for the intricate roles each plant part plays in survival, fostering a sense of curiosity and wonder about the natural world. Students collaborate on creative projects, such as murals and gratitude walls, building social skills and community awareness while deepening their understanding of plant life cycles and pollination.

Learning goals

Students will engage in hands-on exploration to understand plant structures, their functions, and how these contribute to a plant's survival. They will collect data on seed growth, model plant systems, and test variables affecting plant life. In addition, students will recognize the importance of plants historically and culturally through discussions and community involvement. They will reflect on the interconnectedness of plant parts and document their learning and discoveries through creative projects and peer collaboration.
Competencies
  • Scientific Investigation - Collecting data (FL.MST.4.b)
  • Scientific Investigation - Modeling systems (FL.MST.4.c)
  • Scientific Investigation - Testing variables (FL.MST.4.a)
  • Cultures - History and culture (FK.SS.4.c)
  • Scientific Investigation - Understanding causality (FL.MST.4.d)

Products

Students will collaboratively create a vibrant mural or poster project illustrating the plant life cycle, highlighting and labeling each part of the plant along with its function, ensuring each student contributes a section that reflects their learning and insights. Additionally, each student will maintain a personal growth diary documenting daily observations of their planted seed, culminating with individual entries on the 'Garden Gratitude Wall'. This provides a platform for sharing reflections about their discoveries and understanding, as well as expressing gratitude for their learning journey.

Launch

To kick off the learning experience, initiate a 'Seed Planting Party' where each student plants a seed in a cup, embarking on a two-week observation journey. Students will actively engage in documenting daily changes and growth, connecting each development to plant parts and their functions. This hands-on activity not only sparks curiosity but also aligns with the essential question of understanding the importance of each part of a plant.

Exhibition

Students will culminate the project by presenting a vibrant mural or poster display in the elementary hallway. The exhibition will illustrate the plant life cycle, showcasing each student's section with labeled plant parts and their functions. This collective artwork will include reflections from the 'Garden Gratitude Wall,' inviting parents, teachers, and fellow classmates to walk through and engage with the children’s learning journey and findings. In celebrating their collective insights and creativity, students will share their process of growth, understanding, and collaboration with the school community.
