Purpose

This project equips 9th-grade students with the opportunity to employ and demonstrate their biliteracy skills through a comprehensive exploration of significant historical figures in Spanish. By engaging with real-world, cultural, and historical contexts, students will enhance their reading, writing, speaking, and cultural competency, while also developing critical interpersonal and interpretive skills. The project not only serves as a final exam but also provides a collaborative and reflective platform for students to showcase their understanding and personal growth in cultural perspectives and Spanish language proficiency.

Learning goals

Students will enhance their biliteracy by effectively using Spanish language skills to interpret and present information on historical figures. They will develop a deeper understanding of cultural and historical influences, applying past and present tense grammar to articulate ideas both verbally and in writing. Through project reflection and peer interaction, students will strengthen their ability to provide and receive constructive feedback, fostering interpersonal and socio-emotional growth.

Products

Students will develop bilingual slideshow presentations in Spanish that highlight the life and accomplishments of a significant historical figure from musical, political, or social spheres. These presentations will include comprehensive, annotated timelines outlining the historical and cultural influences on their chosen figure's work and legacy. Exhibiting their slideshows, students will engage in a gallery walk where they articulate key insights and reflections in Spanish, allowing them to demonstrate mastery of both language and content. Through reflective journals written in Spanish, students will document their challenges, successes, and growth throughout the project.

Launch

The project kicks off with a dynamic 'Spotlight Series' where students engage with guest speakers or watch videos of experts from diverse fields—history, music, and politics—who share insights into the legacies of influential figures. This launch will set the stage for exploring the essential question from varied cultural perspectives in Spanish, sparking students' curiosity and setting a rich context for their project work.

Exhibition

Students will culminate their project by presenting their Spanish-language slideshow in front of their classmates, highlighting the achievements and cultural contexts of their chosen historical figure. During this class-wide exhibition, students will engage in a Q&A session to delve deeper into the cultural influences and historical significance of their figures, fostering a comprehensive understanding of each other's work. The gallery walk setup will allow visitors to experience the rich tapestry of figures presented, while students explain and discuss their timelines and insights, celebrating their biliteracy achievements and growth.
