Purpose

The multicultural fair aims to foster global understanding and empathy by engaging students in a hands-on exploration of diverse cultures through research, culinary experiences, and presentations. Through collaboration and active participation, students will develop critical thinking skills by exploring cultural nuances and expanding their perspectives. This project-based learning experience encourages students to connect with community partners, which enriches their understanding of cultural practices and nurtures effective communication and shared decision-making.

Learning goals

Students will develop critical thinking skills by researching and formulating questions about diverse cultural traditions, allowing them to explore and analyze complexities authentically. They will enhance their effective communication through listening and empathically engaging with peers and community partners and presenting their research and experiences. Collaboration will be encouraged as students co-design their presentations, share decision-making responsibilities, and take on leadership roles in organizing their contributions to the multicultural fair.

Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.WHST.6-8.7 - Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Students will collaboratively create interactive presentations utilizing multimedia to showcase the cultural traditions and key aspects of their researched country. They will also prepare a traditional dish related to their chosen country, including writing and sharing a detailed recipe card. Following the multicultural fair, students will compile a reflective blog or video journal capturing insights and experiences gained from their peers' presentations, highlighting the diversity encountered during the event.

Launch

Begin the lesson with an immersive cultural storytelling session, where students watch brief multimedia clips or listen to narratives shared by local cultural representatives, sparking curiosity about various global traditions. Thereafter, have students pair up to brainstorm and formulate their individual research questions about specific countries they are interested in, drawing on initial impressions and questions raised during the storytelling. This activity will set the stage for students to explore diverse cultural perspectives while practicing effective communication and collaboration skills.

Exhibition

Students will host a multicultural fair where they creatively present researched cultural practices through interactive exhibits, traditional food tasting stations, and cultural performances. Each group will rotate roles as exhibit hosts, performers, and discussion facilitators to ensure active participation. Community partners, such as local cultural associations, will be invited to join, offering workshops and live demonstrations to deepen the immersive experience for attendees.
