Purpose

The Kindergarten Farm Project is designed to immerse students in the real-world experience of farm life, connecting them with the natural cycles of agriculture through hands-on learning. This project fosters curiosity and inquiry as students explore the roles of farm animals and the process of growing crops, culminating in creating an informational farm book. By partnering with Centennial Farm and Enrich LA, students learn to collaborate, communicate effectively, and build content expertise by interacting with farmers and engaging actively in their own learning journey.

Learning goals

Students will explore the life cycle of plants and understand the conditions required for growth. They will analyze the relationships between farm animals, crops, and their environment, assessing the role each plays in sustaining the farm ecosystem. By conducting independent research and formulating questions for community partners, they will strengthen their skills in inquiry, communication, and collaboration. Through hands-on activities such as planting and interacting with local experts, students will build knowledge, reflect on their experiences, and communicate their findings through a class book and public exhibitions.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create and design an illustrated farm book showcasing their learning, complete with researched details about farm animals, crops, and their interactions. Each student will grow a vegetable plant, documenting its growth in a personal plant journal, which will be presented at the Open House. Students will conduct interviews with the farmer and generate their own interview questions, compiling the responses as a section in the farm book. These products will provide a tangible representation of their learning and discoveries over the project duration, fostering collaboration and community engagement.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with an introductory field trip to Centennial Farm at the Orange County Fairgrounds. This immersive visit will give students the chance to observe farm animals, interact with farmers, and explore crop fields firsthand. Prior to the trip, hold an interactive session where students brainstorm and prepare questions about farm animals and crops, sparking curiosity and setting the stage for active participation during the farm visit.

Exhibition

Students will host a family Open House, transforming their classroom into an immersive farm experience. They will display their informational farm books and present their insights to visiting guests with interactive stations showcasing plants they've cultivated and research on farm animals. Students will guide their families through exploring the connections they've discovered between farm animals, crops, and the environment, facilitating discussions and encouraging guest interaction with their projects. This exhibition fosters a supportive atmosphere, allowing students to communicate their learning and celebrate their accomplishments.
