Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to foster a deeper understanding of students’ own identities and those of their classmates through the exploration of family origins and traditions. By engaging in shared storytelling and collaborative activities, students will practice effective communication and self-directed learning, gaining insights into diverse backgrounds. This project aims to enhance empathy, connection, and self-awareness, helping students appreciate the richness of their shared classroom community.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this experience are to develop effective communication skills by practicing empathetic listening and sharing through storytelling, and to enhance self-directed learning through reflection and feedback from peers and teachers. Students will enhance their vocabulary related to family heritage and customs, while exploring their own background and those of classmates, fostering a deeper understanding of diverse identities. The project will culminate in a collaborative creation—a 'Class Quilt'—which visually represents each student's unique origin story and promotes classroom unity.
Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create personalized vocabulary flashcards featuring words that relate to family heritage and customs. By the end of the week, each student will contribute to a tangible 'Class Quilt,' representing diverse family stories and traditions, accompanied by a written reflection. These quilt squares will serve as a concrete, collective testament to the class's exploration and shared understanding of cultural origins.

Launch

To launch the project, begin by creating a "Family Story Circle." Invite students to bring an item or photograph from home that symbolizes their family's heritage or customs. Assembled in a supportive circle, each child will share the story behind their item, fostering connections and understanding among classmates. This activity sets the stage for the exploration of the essential question: "What can we discover about ourselves and our classmates by exploring where we come from?"

Exhibition

At the end of the week, students will host a "Heritage Showcase" where their family story items and the collaboratively created class quilt will be displayed in the classroom. Each student will present their family square to classmates and invited family members, sharing the stories behind the objects and quilt pieces. This exhibition will foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse backgrounds, empowering students to share meaningful insights about their identities and cultures through storytelling and reflection.
