Purpose

Your project aims to enhance your culinary skills and creativity through cooking, baking, and pottery-making while developing a personalized cookbook. The project encourages you to explore new recipes and techniques, incorporate family traditions, and create a portfolio of ceramics to document your creative journey. You'll engage in meaningful self-reflection, showcasing your progress, and sharing your culinary and artistic achievements with your school community in a vibrant exhibition.

Learning goals

Focus on exploring creativity and craftsmanship in both culinary and ceramic arts. Aim to enhance communication skills through sharing and presenting your creations, and develop critical thinking by experimenting with innovative recipe blends and pottery techniques. Strengthen collaboration skills by embracing feedback and engaging peers in your journey. Build expertise in cooking and pottery by consistently practicing, researching, and iterating your creations.

Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Throughout this project, you will create a diverse and personalized cookbook that chronicles your attempted and perfected recipes, alongside a collection of ceramics like plates, bowls, and cups. You will showcase both your culinary and crafting journey at a school exhibition, displaying your cookbook, pottery pieces, and offering food samples for people to taste and purchase. By the end, these tangible creations will serve as a lasting representation of your skills and the knowledge you've gained, allowing you to share insights and techniques with future generations and peers within your community.

Launch

Start your project with a collaborative potluck-style event, where everyone brings a dish made from family recipes or internet-inspired creations. Encourage visitors to sample various dishes, sparking initial discussions around diverse culinary techniques. Set up a crafting corner showcasing your ceramic tools and materials, allowing guests to interact and understand the pottery processes you will explore during your project. Utilize this event as an opportunity to solicit feedback on potential improvements to your recipes and designs.

Exhibition

Organize a school exhibition where you showcase your handcrafted pottery dishes alongside the cookbook filled with your favorite recipes. Provide samples of your dishes for attendees to taste, and offer the cookbook for purchase to encourage others to try out your recipes at home. Create informational displays detailing your processes and learning journey for both ceramics and cooking. Engage in conversations with attendees, sharing insights gained and learning experiences throughout your project.
