Empathy-Driven Concept Sketching

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving Collaboration Effective Communication Reflection Community Partners Critique and Revision Submission Required

In small groups, conduct direct user contact by interviewing three local San Diego high school students or mentors to uncover barriers and enablers for accessing internships, jobs, and volunteer opportunities. Create empathy artifacts (empathy maps, user stories) from these conversations, then generate a large brainstormed list of solution ideas. Build a Feasibility/Impact matrix to compare concepts, select the top three concepts with clear rationale, and develop rough sketches or storyboards for each. Document iteration notes and plan a lightweight user-testing approach for the top concepts in the next phase. Compile all outputs into a deliverable package for feedback.

2 Facilitate group discussions to identify key barriers and enablers from interview data. (20 min)
3 Create empathy maps and user stories based on interview insights. (25 min)
4 Brainstorm a broad list of solution ideas within your team. (15 min)
5 Develop a Feasibility/Impact matrix to evaluate brainstormed ideas. (20 min)
6 Select top three concepts for further development and draft rough sketches or storyboards for each. (25 min)
7 Document iteration notes and plan lightweight user-testing strategies for selected concepts. (15 min)
8 Compile outputs into a deliverable package for feedback from peers and mentor. (15 min)
Preparation (2 items)
  • Prepare a handout summarizing key interview insights and provide templates for empathy maps, user stories, and the Feasibility/Impact matrix.
  • Set up the room with collaborative workspaces for groups to brainstorm and sketch ideas.
Student-facing instructions
You will use insights from empathy-driven interviews to identify barriers and enablers in accessing opportunities. Begin by reviewing this data with your group. Collaboratively create empathy maps and user stories, and brainstorm a list of potential solutions. Evaluate these ideas using a Feasibility/Impact matrix to select the top three concepts for further development. Draft rough sketches or storyboards for these concepts, document notes, and plan lightweight user-testing strategies. Finally, compile your group's outputs into a package for feedback.
