Purpose

The purpose of your learning experience is to explore and refine architectural skills by creating a climate-specific chicken coop that contributes to the sustainable practices of your family's project, Cultivo, in Valle de Guadalupe. This hands-on project allows you to apply architectural knowledge practically while addressing local and global sustainability challenges. By engaging in this work, you develop valuable skills in critical thinking, collaboration, and communication, ultimately preparing you for a future in architecture and sustainable design.

Learning goals

Develop proficiency in architectural software applications, such as AutoCAD, to create accurate 3D models and technical blueprints. Enhance collaboration and communication skills by actively working with peers, mentors, and community partners to co-design and refine project outcomes. Strengthen critical thinking by exploring innovative design solutions that address sustainable farming practices and animal welfare in the context of the Valle de Guadalupe region. Foster an academic mindset by establishing a strong sense of identity and belonging to your project, leading to increased self-efficacy and personal growth.

Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Throughout this learning experience, you will create a comprehensive technical blueprint and a detailed architectural 3D model for an ergonomic chicken-coop designed specifically for the climate of Valle de Guadalupe. In addition to the physical model, develop a compelling presentation that showcases your research, design process, and the sustainable impact of your project. To enhance your skills further, explore architectural apps such as AutoCAD and document your learning journey through a digital portfolio that highlights your progress and reflections. Conclude by presenting your project at an exhibition, sharing both your technical and creative achievements.

Launch

Kick off your project by hosting a virtual or in-person brainstorming session where you can share your initial ideas and vision for Cultivo with peers, family, and Ms. Meghan. Engage everyone in a collaborative discussion to explore how ergonomics and sustainability can be woven into the design of your chicken-coop. Encourage participants to contribute their own insights or experiences related to architecture and sustainable farming. Use this opportunity to gather innovative ideas and generate enthusiasm for the project's potential impact on the Valle de Guadalupe community. This shared experience will set the stage for active collaboration and establish a strong foundation for your project journey.

Exhibition

Plan an exhibition event where you can showcase your technical blueprint and architectural model of the ergonomic chicken-coop. Set up a booth at Cultivo’s opening event to engage visitors by explaining how your designs promote sustainable farming practices and contribute to a healthy ecosystem in Valle de Guadalupe. Invite your family, community members, and mentors, including Ms. Meghan, to attend and provide feedback on your models. Provide an interactive digital walkthrough using architectural apps like AutoCAD that demonstrate the functionality and innovative design features integrated into your project.
