Purpose

Create a meaningful connection among your senior class by compiling a unique scrapbook that combines cherished recipes, personal memories, and valuable advice. This project highlights the ways in which food fosters relationships and records your collective journey through high school. By integrating interviews and creative design, the scrapbook will serve as an enduring tribute to your shared experiences, while offering guidance and inspiration to future students.

Learning goals

This project will enable you to strengthen your effective communication skills by conducting interviews and collecting meaningful stories from your peers. You'll enhance your critical thinking and problem-solving abilities as you explore innovative and creative ways to present recipes and memories in a scrapbook format. Collaboration will be key, as you co-design elements with classmates and art professionals like Mr. Bob, while reflection on the narratives will deepen your content expertise and self-directed learning. Through this, you’ll cultivate an academic mindset by fostering a deeper sense of community, connection, and personal identity.

  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Through your project, you will create a dynamic scrapbook that showcases the diverse recipes and favorite high school memories shared by your senior class. Each page will feature a recipe accompanied by personal stories or reflections contributed by your peers. Additionally, you'll compile a collection of reflective pieces, offering advice and insights, which will serve as a meaningful resource for future grades. As a way to visually enhance the project, you'll incorporate artistic elements such as layout design, color schemes, and photography, curated with guidance from Mr. Bob. Ultimately, you will present the completed scrapbook and a display of these elements at the end-of-project exhibition.

Launch

Start by hosting a Senior Kick-Off Event where seniors bring a dish and share its significance with the group. As part of this, introduce the project and essential question, and discuss how their recipes and personal stories will create a meaningful scrapbook. Facilitate a discussion about how food has connected them with peers and its role in memorable high school experiences. Encourage seniors to start thinking about their submissions of recipes, memories, and advice for the scrapbook.

Exhibition

Create an engaging exhibition by organizing a vibrant culinary event titled "Senior Recipe Showcase." Set up interactive stations where attendees can browse through the physical scrapbook and view digital displays of seniors’ recipe submissions, photos, and reflections. Invite participants, including community members and younger students, to sample dishes inspired by the recipes presented. Facilitate a gallery walk where you and participating seniors share personal reflections and discuss the significance of food in their high school journey. Conclude with a heartfelt thank you to contributors, celebrating the collective effort and cultural diversity represented within the scrapbook.
