Purpose

Embark on this project to explore the nuanced relationship between historical traditions and animal extinction, aiming to create awareness and advocacy for animal rights. Through the construction and exhibition of a cardboard-structured paper mache model, you'll delve into research, art, and storytelling, fostering empathy and critical thinking. This project empowers you to challenge narratives around extinct animals like the California Golden Bear, while it's designed to cultivate both academic insights and socio-emotional growth among peers.

Learning goals

Develop your understanding of historical events and human activities that led to the extinction of the California Golden Bear. Enhance your engineering skills by constructing a detailed paper-mache model as a tool for storytelling. Cultivate your socio-emotional skills through engaging discussions about the impact of traditions on animal rights and reflect on ways to advocate for change in your community. Expand your research skills by exploring factual information on animal behavior and extinction causes, and refine your public speaking abilities by presenting your findings and models effectively.

Products

You will create a paper mache and cardboard model representing the extinct California Golden Bear. This tangible product will serve as a centerpiece for your visual storytelling and exhibit. Throughout the project, you will also develop a documentary-style presentation that captures the narrative of the bear's extinction, incorporating interviews or insights from community partners, such as veterinary clinics and zoo centers. Additionally, prepare a written reflection that explores the intersection of historical traditions and their impact on animal species, showcasing both your academic and socio-emotional growth.

Launch

Begin your project by visiting the local museum or historical exhibit that focuses on the California Gold Rush to see artifacts related to human impact on wildlife. Then, organize an interactive discussion with a wildlife conservationist who can share insight into animal extinction and advocacy approaches. Kick off hands-on activities by constructing smaller animal models, starting with simpler materials, to practice techniques before tackling the larger paper-mache model.

Exhibition

Organize an exhibition event where your cardboard-structured paper mache model is prominently displayed alongside visual storytelling elements that illustrate the history of the California Golden Bear’s extinction. Invite peers who are interested in animal rights, history, and biology for collaborative workshops and discussions around your project. You can also incorporate interactive sessions such as Q&A panels with community partners like veterinarians or zoologists to provide further insights into the animal extinction narrative. Include reflection opportunities for attendees to express their thoughts and learnings about the impacts of human traditions on wildlife and the importance of advocacy for animal rights.
