Purpose

This project aims to immerse 9th-grade students in a transformative learning journey by exploring the themes of 'Lord of the Flies' through multidimensional, hands-on experiences. Students will critically analyze power dynamics, moral reasoning, and leadership within the text and relate them to real-world scenarios, fostering a deeper understanding of human behavior and societal structures. Through collaborative debates, reflective projects, and interactive exhibitions, students will enhance their communication skills and cultivate self-directed learning habits, while forging meaningful connections with their peers and community.

Learning goals

Students will analyze power dynamics and group interactions both within the context of 'Lord of the Flies' and in real-world scenarios, developing a nuanced understanding of morality and leadership. They will cultivate effective communication and debate skills through peer-led discussions and public exhibitions, integrating empathy and active listening techniques. Additionally, students will deepen their self-knowledge through self-directed learning practices, using feedback loops and reflective journaling to track their socio-emotional growth and intellectual insights. By exploring psychological theories with university partners, students will link academic concepts with their personal experiences, fostering a holistic comprehension of human behavior and ethical decision-making.

Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Throughout the project, students will collaboratively develop a comprehensive 'Survival Strategies Manual' that draws on 'Lord of the Flies' and real-world examples to highlight effective leadership and group dynamics strategies. This manual will be presented during the Survival Strategies Showcase, where students display and demonstrate practical applications. Additionally, students will create visualization projects and reflective journals for the Psychological Perspectives Gallery, offering insight into character analysis and ethical dilemmas. These products, encompassing diverse formats, will serve as vehicles for students to publicly share their insights and learning outcomes with community stakeholders and peers, fostering a deeper connection with the material and real-world applications.

Launch

Students will embark on a simulated 'Island Society Building Activity' where they collaborate to design their own island communities, making pivotal decisions about governance, roles, and resource allocation. This immersive experience will prompt students to explore the influence of individual values and group morals on societal structures. The activity will ignite students' curiosity and set the stage for deeper reflection on the themes and dynamics presented in 'Lord of the Flies'.

Exhibition

Invite community members to a dynamic exhibition combining art, discussion, and practical demonstrations influenced by 'Lord of the Flies.' Students will lead an assembly that navigates central moral questions, while other teams guide guests through a gallery of interpretive projects connecting psychological concepts to literature. The event will also feature interactive survival skill stations, where students present and discuss their compiled 'Survival Strategies Manual,' involving local scout groups to exchange insights and expertise.
