Purpose

The purpose of this six-week project is to engage students in a transformative exploration of lifestyle change, focusing on the essential balance between physical, emotional, and social health. Through hands-on experiences, students collaborate with peers and community partners to gain practical insights into maintaining their well-being. By analyzing scientific studies, participating in skill-building workshops, and reflecting on their own choices, students develop a personalized approach to achieving a holistic healthy lifestyle and embodying long-term wellness principles.

Learning goals

Students will engage in authentic, project-based learning by developing personalized lifestyle change plans that encompass physical, emotional, and social health. Through collaboration with peers and community partners, students will enhance communication skills and critical thinking as they explore lifestyle balance through interactive activities and research. As they participate in cooking classes, workshops, and fair exhibitions, students will apply learned strategies, reflecting on and revising their plans to align with their well-being goals while building self-directed learning capabilities and strengthening connections within the community.
Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Throughout the project, students will develop personalized lifestyle change plans, detailing specific strategies for achieving a balanced approach to physical, emotional, and social health. They will create interactive multimedia presentations highlighting balanced meal plans tailored to various dietary needs, showcasing recipes and nutritional benefits learned from sessions with nutritionists. By the project's conclusion, students will participate in a panel discussion where they present their lifestyle plans, sharing insights gained and receiving feedback from peers and community partners.

Launch

Kick off the project with a "Wellness Challenge Day," where students participate in a series of interactive stations focused on physical activities, emotional health exercises, and social interaction games. Include foundational tasks such as creating vision boards for lifestyle goals and brainstorming initial ideas for personal change plans. Involve community partners from the start to share inspiring stories and provide expert insights, setting the stage for the holistic project journey.

Exhibition

The project culminates in a 'Balance and Wellness Fair,' where students host interactive presentations and workshops showcasing their personalized lifestyle change plans. They present strategies for achieving balanced health goals in physical, emotional, and social aspects to community members and peers. Students also demonstrate healthy cooking techniques, mindfulness exercises, and fitness routines learned through community collaborations, fostering dialogue on sustainable wellness practices. Community partners participate in panel sessions to offer expert insights and engage attendees in discussions on lifestyle balance. This event emphasizes student agency in health and wellness advocacy, contributing to a collective community effort for healthier life choices.
