Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to immerse students in the rich tapestry of Mexican culture through its culinary traditions, using food as a lens to explore historical and cultural narratives. By engaging in hands-on, interactive projects like creating a digital recipe book and virtual market tour, students will connect language learning with culture, fostering deeper understanding and self-reflection. The project encourages active participation, collaboration, and critical thinking, enabling students to appreciate the interplay between language and culture while honing their Spanish skills in a meaningful context, adjusted to make it attainable for those at the introductory level of Spanish.

Learning goals

Students will explore the historical and cultural significance of Mexican culinary traditions, particularly the role of corn, by creating a digital recipe book. They will build Spanish vocabulary related to food and cooking, enhancing their language skills through role-play and interaction. Students will develop self-regulation and reflection skills by maintaining a journal, documenting their language acquisition and cultural insights. Through collaborative work on digital maps, students will gain an understanding of Mexico's diverse culinary regions, honing their research, design, and annotation abilities in Spanish, with a focus on providing attainable tasks for Spanish 1 learners.
Competencies
  • Cultures - History and culture (FK.SS.4.c)
  • Self-Regulation - Self-reflection (LL.SM.3.b)

Products

Students will collaboratively create a digital recipe book highlighting traditional Mexican dishes, featuring Spanish translations and cultural annotations tailored for beginners. They will produce a digital interactive map that identifies key Mexican culinary regions and includes straightforward food descriptions in Spanish, aimed at sparking curiosity about cultural contexts. Throughout the project, students will maintain reflective journals to document their language progress and emerging understandings of Mexican culture.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'Mercado Immersive Experience' in the classroom where students explore market-inspired stations. At each station, they interact with Spanish descriptions and cultural artifacts related to traditional Mexican foods and marketplace settings. This engaging activity introduces them to key vocabulary and cultural concepts, preparing them for the upcoming project on Mexican culinary traditions.

Exhibition

Organize a "Mexican Market Showcase" in the classroom where students present their completed digital recipe books and interactive maps. Invite peers, teachers, and family members to explore the students' work, discovering the cultural and historical significance behind each dish and region. Attendees can interact with the digital elements, engage in discussions with students about their learning process, and participate in simple vocabulary games that highlight key terms and cultural aspects covered during the project.
