Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse kindergarten students in an engaging, hands-on exploration of tide pools and their inhabitants. Through guided discovery, students will develop an understanding of marine biodiversity and how different creatures adapt to living in a tide pool ecosystem. By crafting dioramas and artworks, they enrich their artistic skills while sharing knowledge with peers, family, and community, fostering a sense of collaboration and pride in their learning achievements. Engaging with experts and reflecting on experiences promotes curiosity and emotional connections to the natural world, building a foundation for environmental awareness and appreciation.

Learning goals

Students will explore and identify various tide pool creatures, gaining a foundational understanding of marine ecosystems and adaptation strategies. They will develop observation skills and artistic expression by creating 3D models and artwork that capture the diversity and characteristics of tide pool life. Through interactive activities and reflection, students will enhance their ability to communicate scientific information artistically and verbally, fostering collaborative discussions and peer feedback exchanges.

Products

Students will craft 3D tide pool dioramas showcasing various creatures and invite community members to view them during a special exhibit. They will also assemble a tide pool creature art gallery with paintings, drawings, and clay sculptures created by students, documenting their understanding and artistic interpretation of marine biodiversity. Throughout the project, students will develop their art skills using various materials to create representations of tide pool creatures, which they will use to guide visitors through each diorama, explaining creature behaviors and survival strategies.

Launch

The project begins with a 'Tide Pool Safari' in the classroom, transforming the space with interactive stations that mimic different tide pool zones. Students explore these areas filled with images, props, and mini-dioramas, encountering new animal friends and learning about their unique habitats. This immersive start sparks curiosity and sets the stage for students to delve deeper into the world of tide pool creatures throughout the project.

Exhibition

Invite students to host a vibrant community exhibition showcasing their 3D tide pool dioramas and art gallery. Students will guide visitors through their displays, sharing knowledge about tide pool creatures, their artistic inspirations, and discoveries made during the project. The event will be a joyful celebration, highlighting the students' creativity and understanding of marine biodiversity. Engage visitors with interactive storytelling and personal reflections displayed alongside the artworks and models, offering insight into the young explorers' learning experiences.
