Purpose

This project immerses high school students in a comprehensive, real-world exploration of global issues through hands-on engagement and collaborative activities. By representing different countries in Model UN simulations, students navigate geopolitical dynamics, trade negotiations, and resource management strategies, fostering their understanding of international relations and cultural influences on global policies. The aim is to deepen students' competencies in public policy, resource access, and global connections while developing critical thinking, research skills, and socio-emotional insights into collaboration and empathy. Through interactive experiences, students gain a nuanced perspective on how historical, economic, and environmental factors shape nations' roles in the global arena.

Learning goals

Students will develop critical research skills, mastering source credibility assessments and constructing detailed annotated bibliographies to analyze global issues from a country-specific perspective. As they role-play in Model UN simulations and engage in Socratic seminars, they will deepen their understanding of geopolitical dynamics and their impact on resource management and cultural heritage. Through hands-on activities such as the Global Trade Simulation and collaborations with community partners, students will refine competencies in public policy, global connections, resource access, and influencing governmental actions, culminating in creating educational games and digital portfolios showcasing their research insights and strategic thought processes.
Competencies
  • Governments - Public policy (FK.SS.1.c)
  • Cultures - Global connections (FK.SS.4.d)
  • Economics - Access to resources (FK.SS.3.c)
  • Politics - Social movements (FK.SS.2.b)
  • Politics - Influencing government (FK.SS.2.a)

Products

Throughout this project, students will create reflective journals that capture their insights on collaboration and research findings, culminating in a digital portfolio showcasing annotated bibliographies, video summaries, and a comprehensive final presentation. By the end of the project, students will design an educational board game simulating trade negotiations and resource management, aligning with the economic strategies of their chosen country. This board game, alongside their presentations, will play a key role in the 'Global Showcase Fair' where they will set up interactive booths that include multimedia displays, cultural artifacts, and demonstrations reflecting global engagement, cultural influence, and ecological initiatives.

Launch

Organize a 'Global Trade Simulation Game' to kick off the project, where students take on roles of diplomats from their chosen countries. Each student must negotiate trade agreements and navigate complexities in resource management and industrial growth. This immersive activity encourages collaboration and critical thinking while introducing students to real-world economic strategies. Through competitive and interactive gameplay, students experience the dynamic interplay of global trade and its impacts on policy and diplomacy, setting the stage for deeper exploration of their selected countries throughout the project.

Exhibition

The 'Global Showcase Fair' offers an interactive platform for students to present their work, featuring multimedia displays and cultural artifacts from their chosen country. Each booth creatively demonstrates economic and environmental strategies with engaging activities that reveal insights gained throughout their research. Compelling presentations should communicate the nuances of the selected country's geopolitical dynamics and cultural heritage, fostering dialogues among students, educators, and community partners.
