Purpose

The project's purpose is to engage students in analyzing and communicating the nuanced impact of immigration policies on individuals and communities through multimedia storytelling and digital media. By collaborating with community partners, students will hone their skills in research, effective communication, and critical thinking, while fostering a deeper understanding of identity, social justice, and the power of personal narratives. This learning experience aims to cultivate students' capabilities to advocate and raise awareness on important societal issues while building a sense of community belonging and empathy.

Learning goals

Students will gain a deeper understanding of the impact of immigration policies through personal narratives and digital media while mastering effective communication skills, including empathy and active listening. They will develop the ability to critique and revise content collaboratively, with a focus on grammar and content accuracy. Through engaging with community partners, they will enhance critical thinking and problem-solving by examining authentic community issues. Additionally, students will amplify their technological skills by producing and publishing digital content, such as podcasts and infographics, to articulate well-researched arguments and narratives, fostering a personal connection to social justice.

Products

Students will create a podcast series, featuring interviews with local community members, politicians, and experts discussing the impact of immigration policies. In addition, they will curate digital products such as infographics and blogs, showcasing their storytelling and analytical skills. These efforts will culminate in a multimedia storytelling event, allowing students to present researched and personal narratives to engage the wider community and spark meaningful dialogue.

Launch

Begin with a 'Social Justice Movements Scavenger Hunt,' where students venture into their community to identify signs, art, or events connected to immigration advocacy. Collaborate with local politicians and community organizers to facilitate meaningful dialog around grassroots mobilization. This hands-on exploration sets the stage for understanding the complexities of immigration issues, engaging students in active learning from the outset.

Exhibition

The project culminates in a 'Digital Justice Gallery' where students present their podcasts, infographics, blogs, and digital narratives about immigration, shared online to spark community discourse. Invite community partners, including local politicians and organizers, to engage in a virtual dialogue based on the students' work, encouraging feedback and discussion. Leverage social media to extend the reach of the exhibition, providing a platform for students to interact with a wider audience and elevate the voices and stories they've gathered.
