Purpose

This project aims to immerse 9th-grade students in understanding linear functions through real-world applications and hands-on experiences. It encourages them to explore the implications of function notation and linear models, fostering their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students will develop their content expertise, communicate findings effectively, and engage in meaningful self-directed learning by crafting digital portfolios and participating in exhibitions.

Learning goals

Students will develop and apply their understanding of linear functions through real-world modeling activities. They will explore the concepts of domain and range, construct functions, and analyze relationships using graphs and models. By engaging in problem-solving and communication, students will interpret function notations within practical contexts while participating in the dynamic 'Math in Motion' project. Throughout the project, students will refine their critical thinking by evaluating, presenting, and reflecting on their learning experiences as documented in their digital portfolios.

Standards
  • [Wisconsin] M.9-12.F-IF.A.2 - Use function notation, evaluate functions. and interpret statements that use function notation in terms of a context. (F2Y)
  • [Wisconsin] M.9-12.F-LE.A.2 - Construct linear and exponential functions, including arithmetic and geometric sequences, given a graph, a description of a relationship, or two input-output pairs (include reading these from a table). (F2Y)
Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Throughout this learning experience, students will create and refine digital portfolios that capture their exploration and understanding of linear functions in real-world scenarios. They will develop interactive simulations presenting real-world situations, demonstrating how linear functions can be applied and manipulated to solve complex problems. By the end, each student will present a compelling 'Math in Motion' exhibit, showcasing their dynamic models and creative interpretations of data through graphs and equations as they relate to changes over time.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'Math in Motion Day,' where students collaborate in dynamic activities requiring them to measure, analyze, and graph physical movements such as running or jumping. Each student will record their data, using it to create linear models that visually demonstrate their interpretations of real-world functions. This interactive experience sets the stage for critical analysis and practical application of functions in the upcoming four-week timeframe.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Math in Motion' exhibition where they present their digital portfolios showcasing real-world linear function models. They will interact with peers, parents, and community members while demonstrating their problem-solving strategies through dynamic presentations. Feedback stations will allow visitors to provide insights, fostering an environment of collaboration and reflection.
