Purpose

This project aims to empower 9th-grade students to explore and address critical issues impacting the African American community through collaborative research, artistic expression, and meaningful dialogue. By engaging with local partners and experts, students will develop an informed perspective, fostering a sense of belonging and identity while advocating for change. Through real-world applications such as panel discussions, exhibitions, and cultural exchanges, students will harness their critical thinking and communication skills to craft narratives that resonate with their community and initiate insightful conversations.

Learning goals

This project aims to deepen students' understanding of complex African American issues through critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication. By engaging with community partners, students will develop skills in empathy-driven dialogue and explore innovative solutions. Through research and storytelling, students will strengthen their academic mindset, fostering a sense of identity and belonging while reflecting on personal growth. Ultimately, students will creatively present their findings, advocating for awareness and change, enhancing their socio-emotional and intellectual development.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Throughout the project, students will produce various multimedia products showcasing their research and insights into African American issues. Students will create murals depicting community challenges, interactive installations that simulate pressing issues, and a documentary film incorporating student research and narratives from local African American leaders. The podcast series will feature students' reflections, expert interviews, and guest speaker contributions, emphasizing the depth of their understanding. Each product will be designed to engage and provoke thoughtful dialogue during the exhibitions and celebrations, fostering community involvement and collective reflection on change.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Voices of Change' film festival. Screen select documentaries and short films that highlight social justice issues impacting the African American community, followed by a panel discussion featuring filmmakers and activists. Encourage students to reflect on how these stories influence their perspectives and discussions, setting the stage for empathetic, critical thinking, and inspiring them to explore similar themes throughout their projects.

Exhibition

Students will cap off the project with a 'Change Makers' gallery walk, displaying their art installations and murals narrating significant African American stories and issues. This interactive exhibition invites community members to engage with the artworks and listen to audio narrations that accompany each piece. A special 'Cultural Exchange Fiesta' will feature the collaborative efforts with the Spanish class, integrating pinatas, music playlists, and cross-cultural presentations that highlight African American issues identified through research. These events offer a platform for students to present their creative and research findings while fostering a dialogue between the community, students, and educators.
