Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse 9th-grade students in the rich tapestry of Asian film movements through an engaging 4-week learning experience. By connecting traditional Asian art and literature to cinematic themes, students will collaboratively explore cultural narratives, fostering critical thinking and self-reflection. Through hands-on activities like script adaptation, film exhibitions, and interactive storytelling, students will deepen their understanding of identity and community, while honing skills that emphasize creative expression and thoughtful analysis.

Learning goals

Students will explore and interpret the connection between traditional Asian art, literature, and film movements, identifying how these elements inform each other in both theme and aesthetics. They will refine collaborative storytelling and critique skills through hands-on script adaptation, embracing a community-based feedback process. The project will also foster students' reflective and critical thinking by encouraging them to examine and articulate their socio-emotional connections to Asian film narratives, ultimately synthesizing their learning in an engaging visual exhibition and discussion with the community.
Competencies
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Throughout this study of Asian film movements, students will craft and refine mini movie scripts inspired by traditional Asian literature. They will create a visual essay that explores thematic and aesthetic connections between Asian film and traditional arts, presenting their findings during the 'Lights, Camera, Asia!' virtual exhibition and via interactive displays in the 'Film Movement Maze.' Additionally, students will produce a reflective art project that visually captures their socio-emotional journey during the project. The final showcase will culminate in an Asian Film Night or a gallery exhibit where students' work is shared with the broader community.

Launch

Kick off the Studio with 'Film Fusion Day,' where students dive into collaborative storytelling sessions. They'll adapt traditional Asian literature into mini movie scripts, exploring the rich themes and aesthetics unique to Asian film movements. This immersive event sets the stage for the project by actively involving students in creative expression and cultural exploration from the start.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Lights, Camera, Asia!' virtual exhibition, showcasing visual essays with live Q&A sessions supported by the local movie theater. Additionally, an interactive 'Film Movement Maze' will be set up, where guests explore stations dedicated to Asian film movements, featuring student-led discussions, engaging displays, and curated film segments. This dual-exhibition format allows students to present their work to the community in dynamic and immersive ways.
