Purpose

Students will work collaboratively to design and build a functional website for their school club, integrating real-world skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript over a four-week period. By actively engaging with community partners from both the academic and professional fields, students will enhance not only their technical abilities but also their communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. This project enables students to create meaningful connections between their club activities and a broader audience, fostering a sense of ownership and agency while developing a digital platform that effectively communicates their club's mission and engages the school community.

Learning goals

Students will design and build a fully functional website for their school club, applying HTML, CSS, and JavaScript skills to enhance their technological proficiency and creative expression. They will strengthen collaboration and teamwork by co-designing the project, making collective decisions, and resolving conflicts. Through engaging with community partners, students will refine their critical thinking, adopt innovative approaches, and practice effective communication by developing content that resonates with their audience. Students will also cultivate reflection skills, assessing their growth and readiness for future projects. The experience will empower them to take on leadership roles while developing a deeper understanding of the technological and social dynamics of their community.
Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will create a dynamic, engaging club website that includes a blog section where members can publish articles highlighting club activities and accomplishments. This website will serve as a central hub for the club, featuring enhanced design and functionality through collaborative coding efforts. By the end of the project, each group will have a fully functional website prototype, ready to be launched and showcased to their school and the wider community during key exhibition events.

Launch

Kick off the project with a dynamic 'Code and Connect' event where students dive into hands-on coding workshops facilitated by the university's computer science department. During this time, students collaborate in teams to brainstorm and sketch initial ideas for their club's website, utilizing interactive HTML/CSS/JavaScript sessions to spark creativity. Alongside these technical sessions, conduct engaging team-building activities designed to strengthen collaboration and shared decision-making skills. Conclude the day by having students share initial concepts with peers, fostering an early sense of community and collective vision for the project.

Exhibition

Students will showcase their completed websites during a Digital Gallery Walk, where they will set up individual stations at which attendees, including peers, teachers, community partners, and family members, can explore the sites on tablets or computers. To conclude the project, a Website Launch Party will be organized, allowing students to present their websites on large screens or projectors to a wider audience. This event will feature interactive booths for hands-on exploration of the websites, fostering engagement and feedback from the school community.
