Purpose

This project aims to engage high school students in the design and creation of a versatile outdoor space that serves dual purposes: promoting physical activity and facilitating community gatherings. Students will collaborate to conceptualize and construct features that cater to diverse needs, encouraging inclusivity and participation. Through this hands-on experience, students will apply real-world problem-solving skills, deepen their understanding of design principles, and foster essential skills such as communication, collaboration, and self-directed learning, while meeting national core arts standards for healthful practices in dance and physical activities.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively design a multipurpose outdoor space that integrates physical activity, learning, and community engagement. They will apply principles of healthful practices, including nutrition and injury prevention, in their design process, aligning with personal performance goals. Through this project, students will develop skills in collaboration, effective communication, and critical thinking, while engaging in self-directed learning and fostering a strong academic mindset.
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] DA:Pr5.1.I.b - Develop a plan for healthful practices in dance activities and everyday life including nutrition and injury prevention. Discuss implementation of the plan and how it supports personal performance goals.
Competencies
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and construct a multipurpose outdoor space, including features for physical education and community presentations. Throughout the process, they will develop models and prototypes, utilizing innovative research and technology to finalize design plans. At the end of the project, students will present their creation in a showcase event, demonstrating its functionality and impact, while reflecting on their learning journey and addressing community feedback.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a collaborative site visit to existing multipurpose spaces in the community to gather design inspiration and functionality ideas. Following the visit, facilitate a brainstorming session where students sketch initial ideas and consider how the design can meet diverse needs while promoting physical activity and community engagement. Encourage students to present their sketches in small groups, fostering peer feedback and incorporating insights on effective communication and collaboration.

Exhibition

Students will present their final outdoor space designs to an audience of peers, educators, and community members in a collaborative exhibition event. Each group will showcase models, drawings, and prototypes of their proposed multipurpose physical education/presentation space, highlighting the features that support movement, learning, and engagement. The exhibition will include interactive sessions where students explain design choices and demonstrate how their plans meet diverse needs for inclusivity. Attendees can provide feedback, promoting real-world communication and critical analysis skills as students reflect on their work and potential community impact.
