Purpose

The learning experience aims to cultivate an understanding of nonprofit organizations and their vital roles in society while encouraging students to design innovative solutions to community needs. Through hands-on collaboration with local nonprofits, students develop essential skills in critical thinking, effective communication, collaboration, and content expertise. By engaging in real-world projects, students refine their academic mindset and self-directed learning abilities, ultimately fostering a sense of identity, belonging, and purpose as active participants within their communities.

Learning goals

Students will collaboratively research and interact with local nonprofits, honing their communication and teamwork skills while gathering insights into nonprofit operations. They will develop critical thinking and financial acumen by crafting detailed business models that incorporate budgeting forecasts and sustainable funding strategies. Through the design of logos and promotional materials, students will exercise creativity and branding expertise, culminating in compelling presentations during the 'Shark Tank' assessment and the Nonprofit Expo. Reflective mid-project feedback sessions will foster self-directed learning, allowing students to refine their approaches based on constructive critique from peers and nonprofit partners.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will create interactive digital storybooks that feature engaging narratives and animations, allowing audiences to learn about the mission and impact of their nonprofit. As part of the Nonprofit Expo, students will also produce marketing items such as hats, shirts, and coasters to promote their nonprofit's brand and mission. Additionally, students will develop comprehensive financial plans, showcasing budgeting forecasts and sustainability strategies that support their nonprofit's objectives.

Launch

To kick off the project, engage students in a "Community Needs Bag Challenge" where they each design and create a product in a bag that addresses a specific need within their community. Students present their creations and explain how their product helps fulfill a community need, fostering initial collaborative discussions and inspiring innovative ideas for their nonprofit projects. The challenge sets the stage for understanding the core components of social impact and lays the foundation for deeper learning throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will participate in a dynamic 'Nonprofit Expo,' transforming the school hall into a marketplace of ideas, where each group sets up engaging displays to showcase their nonprofit's mission and creative branding. Through interactive elements like digital storybooks and interactive presentations, students will actively demonstrate their understanding and innovations while engaging attendees in discussions about social causes. This exhibition offers attendees the opportunity to purchase uniquely crafted merchandise, designed by the students, which reflects the ethos of their nonprofit ventures and supports community initiatives.
