Purpose

This learning experience aims to deepen students' understanding of how various artistic mediums and color theory impact the emotional and meaningful perception of portraits. Through hands-on projects and peer collaboration, students will explore the complexities and nuances involved in creating art that effectively communicates feelings and themes. The integration of critique, reflection, and exhibition practices supports students in refining their artistic expression and developing critical thinking skills.

Learning goals

Students will explore and apply color theory to create expressive grid portraits using various artistic mediums. They will analyze and reflect on the emotional impact of different materials in their artwork, citing specific vocabulary terms. Through peer critiques and gallery exhibitions, students will develop communication skills by articulating their artistic choices and receiving constructive feedback. Collaborative interactions with the graphic design class will foster community connections and broaden perspectives. Ultimately, students will enhance their ability to convey emotion and meaning in visual art while refining their personal artistic vision.

Products

Students will create a grid portrait where each section consists of a different artistic medium, applying color theory to evoke specific emotions. Throughout the project, students will use art vocabulary to experiment and refine their work, documenting their choices and reflections in sketchbooks. At the end of the lesson, they will present their finalized portraits during a gallery walk, accompanied by a written reflection on their artistic process and the emotional impact of different mediums.

Launch

To kick off the learning experience, engage students with a 'Portrait Emotion Hunt.' Display a collection of famous portraits around the classroom and have students analyze them for the emotions depicted. Facilitate a discussion on how different artistic styles and mediums influence the viewer's emotional interpretation, guiding students to connect these observations with the upcoming project. Encourage students to take notes and prepare questions for artists, centering their thoughts on the Essential Question.

Exhibition

Hold a gallery exhibition in collaboration with the graphic design class, creating an interactive space where students showcase their completed grid portraits alongside the graphic design students' projects. Organize a gallery walk, encouraging attendees to leave positive, constructive feedback on sticky notes beside each piece. Arrange for students to take turns explaining the emotion and meaning behind their work, fostering an environment of dialogue and appreciation for artistic expression.
