Purpose

Students will engage in a project-based learning experience where they apply their understanding of area and perimeter to design efficient, engaging virtual spaces in Minecraft. By tackling real-world challenges in park design, students will deepen their critical thinking skills as they optimize layouts and balance community function with aesthetic appeal. Through interactive collaborations with local parks and recreation experts, they will connect mathematical concepts to authentic environmental planning, culminating in a virtual showcase that invites community interaction and feedback.

Learning goals

Throughout this project, third graders will develop a comprehensive understanding of area and perimeter by engaging in the design of a virtual park in Minecraft. Students will hone their critical thinking skills by making informed design decisions using mathematical concepts to optimize space. They will also learn to communicate their reasoning effectively by connecting their virtual designs to real-world park planning practices shared by community partners.
Standards
  • [Kentucky] KY.3.MD.8 - Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons.
  • [Kentucky] KY.3.MD.5 - Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinker - Thinks deeply and makes informed decisions to create solutions or new understanding supported by relevant and reliable evidence.

Products

Throughout the learning experience, students will create detailed designs of their virtual park using Minecraft, incorporating mathematical concepts to optimize space. The final product will be a fully developed Minecraft community garden, featuring strategically arranged plots, pathways, seating, and water elements. Each student will present their park design online, explaining how area and perimeter informed their layout choices, while engaging viewers through shared links and interactive feedback.

Launch

Kick off the unit with a readiness activity where students brainstorm parks they have visited and identify their favorite features. Introduce Minecraft with a brief overview and showcase an example of a virtual park within the game. Set the stage for the project by presenting the essential question, "How can we design a virtual park in Minecraft that maximizes space using the concepts of area and perimeter?" Lastly, watch a virtual tour video created by the local parks and recreation department to frame real-world connections, sparking excitement for the upcoming project.

Exhibition

Students will showcase their thoughtfully designed virtual Minecraft parks during the Minecraft Park Expo, hosted on a custom webpage. Each student’s work will be accompanied by their explanations of how they utilized area and perimeter concepts to optimize space. Community members, including representatives from local parks and recreation departments, will be invited to explore these creative projects online and interact through comments and questions, fostering authentic dialogue between students and park planning experts.
