Purpose

Students will explore and tackle the problem of food waste at their middle school by investigating different ways to reduce it and understanding possible challenges. They'll work with classmates and local community members to brainstorm ideas like composting and recycling. As part of the project, students will create and share plans with visual aids, practicing how to think critically, solve real problems, and communicate their ideas effectively. Guiding questions include: How can we understand and measure food waste? What strategies can we create to reduce it? What steps can we take to track our progress and improve our school community?

Learning goals

Students will explore why food waste happens at school and think of realistic ways to solve it. They will work together in teams, using questions like "What can we do to decrease food waste in our school?" and "How can we tell if our solutions are working?" They will connect with community partners, like local gardens, to learn more and create plans for things like composting. Students will also practice sharing their ideas clearly with others by presenting their projects, which will help them become more confident and feel more connected to their school community.

Products

We will create a school-specific food waste reduction plan with visuals to show our ideas clearly. Students will work together to make posters or infographics that explain their findings and solutions. They will present their work to school leaders and create displays for an open house. As we go along, let's keep track of questions like, "What are we learning?" and "How can we explain our ideas better?" to help guide our thinking and reflections.

Launch

Start with a "Lunchroom Detective Mission" where students explore food waste in the cafeteria. Provide them with simple observation sheets to note down what food they see being thrown away and why. Encourage them to ask cafeteria staff and fellow students questions like, "What foods are left uneaten?" and "Why do you think this is happening?" This activity helps students see the problem of food waste up close and prepares them to create thoughtful solutions.

Exhibition

Students will share their waste reduction plans and findings during an exhibition featuring creative displays and presentations. As they prepare, they will use guiding questions like, "What is our main plan?" and "How can we make our school care about reducing waste?" Showcasing their ideas to the principal, food services director, and at the open house, they will aim to connect with everyone involved and inspire action.
