Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse students in real-world financial scenarios, encouraging them to creatively explore and apply personal finance concepts. Through hands-on activities, such as designing financial plans and making decisions in simulated environments, students will enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By collaboratively developing innovative strategies for money management, they will connect learning to future aspirations and community impact. Engaging with peers and experts in the field will promote effective communication and deeper understanding of financial literacy as it applies to their lives and future goals.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project-based experience focus on developing a comprehensive understanding of personal finance, including calculating percentages for taxes and managing budget equations and inequalities. Students will engage in critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication by designing and narrating their financial planning processes. They will hone collaborative skills through co-designing activities, negotiate shared decisions, and strengthen leadership abilities. The project emphasizes real-world applications, prompting students to reflect on financial strategies and build a digital portfolio, documenting personal growth in planning and managing finances related to future aspirations.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Products

Throughout the learning experience, students will produce a series of visual timelines that chronicle their financial learning and personal budgeting tips, which can impact their future decisions. They will design interactive infographics that incorporate creative storytelling, highlighting the financial planning process and linking it to personal and professional dreams. Students will also create comprehensive Google Slides presentations accompanied by linked spreadsheets to display their project findings. These products will culminate in a 'Fiscal Showcase,' where students present their curated artworks and personal reflections on their financial journeys, integrating insights gained along the way.

Launch

Begin with a 'Future Funds Festival,' where students collaborate with teachers to create workshops that explore essential financial habits and skills needed for future success. Invite guest speakers from local financial institutions to share insights and stories, helping to frame real-world contexts. Host interactive stations where students practice creating budgets for various life stages, simulating the financial choices they might encounter as adults. These dynamic, hands-on sessions set the stage for students to explore personal finance through authentic, engaging experiences.

Exhibition

Students will create a captivating 'Fiscal Showcase' mural or art exhibit that illustrates their financial journeys, incorporating vibrant artworks and multimedia pieces. Personal reflections will be shared alongside the visuals to offer deeper insights. Families and community members will be invited to a 'Money Management Celebration', where students present videos or digital stories that creatively convey how their financial planning knowledge could shape their lives. This celebration will allow for communal recognition of students' learning and achievements as they narrate the impact of personal financial planning on their future goals.
