Purpose

Students will embark on a journey to master logarithms and logarithmic functions through interactive learning experiences that tie directly into their Algebra 2 curriculum. The project is structured to include hands-on study practice modeling, personalized study schedule creation, and reflective analysis covering note-taking and exam preparedness. Key deliverables include active study observations, structured study plans, self-reflections on preparation and performance, and a post-exam evaluation connecting study habits to exam results. By comparing outcomes across different question types according to Bloom's taxonomy, students will critically assess how their preparation influences their academic achievement, fostering self-directed learning and effective communication skills.

Learning goals

Learning goals include: 1. Master logarithmic functions and concepts through hands-on activities. 2. Demonstrate and apply different levels of comprehension by solving and explaining algebra problems in diverse contexts. 3. Exhibit refined and individualized study strategies informed by self-reflection and peer feedback. 4. Conduct post-exam error analysis to adapt and improve learning strategies, supporting continuous academic growth.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will begin by creating personalized study guides focused on logarithms and logarithmic functions, incorporating active study methods discussed during the project launch. They will maintain reflective journals tracking their study schedules, note-taking practices, and preparation strategies throughout the project. After the exam, students will conduct an error analysis to identify areas for improvement and refine their techniques. The culminating deliverable will be a comprehensive portfolio showcasing their algebraic knowledge and reflections on their study habits and preparation's impact on exam performance.

Launch

Begin the project by modeling how to actively study unfamiliar algebraic concepts, focusing on logarithms and their applications. Ask students to observe and document the strategies used, comparing them to their existing study practices. Following the demonstration, engage students in a discussion to collectively exchange insights and suggestions for integrating effective learning strategies into their own preparation routines. Students will then select one specific strategy they plan to use as part of their study process, presenting their choice and reasoning to their peers.

Exhibition

Students will develop study portfolios showcasing their grasp of logarithms and their reflective study practices. Each portfolio will feature a reflective essay connecting preparation strategies, exam outcomes, and insights from post-exam analysis. Students will present their portfolios in a structured exhibition to classmates and teachers, highlighting their learning evolution and enhanced preparation methods. In addition, they will solve advanced logarithmic problems on the spot, articulating their thought processes, inviting feedback, and fostering a collaborative learning environment.
